Happy Rosh Hashanah from Iowa City
When my kids went to the local school, before I started homeschooling, I made a big deal about Rosh Hashanah.
We didn’t go to synagogue. Too boring. And also, we live in rural Wisconsin so it’s a 90-minute drive to the closest synagogue. Instead, I made a big deal out of Rosh Hashanah by taking my kids out of school for the day. I announced, “It’s Rosh Hashanah! Jewish parents don’t work on Rosh Hashanah and kids don’t go to school!”
My kids loved Rosh Hashana because because they were the only kids in the school district who got the day off. And I felt like my point was made: We are Jewish and we are different and Rosh Hashanah is a big deal.
Now that we homeschool, I need a new plan. So this year I took the kids to Iowa City, where we will eat dinner with my family and then go to synagogue for as long as the kids can stay awake.
This photo is the warm, Iowa City welcome we received when we got here.

Love it. A sweet one to you and your family.
Holy Home Sick! I went to a very alternative private high school in Iowa and college in Iowa City. What a great Happy Monday to see the Englert sign on your site this morning. I used to work at Vortex, the New Agey store right next door to the theater. I hope you enjoy your new year and your family.
Proof that Iowa City is the best little city in the midwest! Happy New Year!
